Cute Wedding Idea: DIY Cake Toppers

Brides today love anything for their wedding that feels unique and handmade. It could be the perfect letterpress invitations made by a tiny press or the unique handcrafted bridesmaid jewelry made in a local boutique. Creating things for your own wedding can also be a lot of fun, and while you may not have a press or know how to make sparkling handcrafted bridesmaid jewelry, any creative bride can DIY something for her celebration. One of the cutest wedding DIY projects is a special wedding cake topper.

Making your own cake topper can be as simple or as involved a project as your experience and interest dictates. The great thing about this project is that you don't have to actually make the whole cake to have a part in how it looks. A simple but charming DIY cake topper is to fill a vintage teacup with an arrangement of roses. "Bloom" the petals of the roses open for a fuller and more lush effect. The teacup cake topper would be absolutely delightful on a vintage inspired tiered cake with a white and ivory swag design. Sometimes the simplest ideas can be just perfect.

If you or your fiance has woodworking skills, this can be another avenue for creating a unique topper for your wedding cake. For a rustic wedding in the woods, whittle a charming wooden squirrel to perch on top of your dessert. Or shape wood into primitive style figures, and hand paint one to be the bride and the other to be the groom. It would be far more special than buying the same plastic bride and groom figurine that thousands of other couples have used before. Let your imagination flow – you could carve a wooden gingerbread couple for a winter wedding, or top your cake with a small log with your initials carved into the side in a heart. Any of these would be just great for a rustic wedding.

Bird motifs tend to be fairly popular among DIY brides. A lovely idea for a cake topper is to create a pair of lovebirds or bluebirds nestled together in a nest. The supplies can be readily found at any craft store. All you need is the nest materials (sometimes you can even find pre-made nests), some moss, two little birdies, and your trusty hot glue gun. Add some tiny velvet flowers to the nest if you wish to dress it up a bit. Adding a veil to the "bride" bird is optional. What a sweet topper for a spring wedding cake.

Brides who happen to own a crafting tool like a Cricut can do all sorts of amazing things for wedding cake toppers. Actually, with a little practice, you might just be able to decorate the entire cake using the intricate fondant shapes created by the wedding cartridges. Another option for brides interested in creating sugar cake toppers is to take a class at a local craft store. Many of the larger stores offer specialty workshops that teach brides how to create the incredible fondant flowers you see in the magazines. This is a more advanced DIY topper project, and as they say, practice makes perfect.

With so many delightful options for a DIY cake topper, it might just be one of the most fun things to make for your wedding. It is a small project, and quite low risk, since you will create it well before the wedding date. Why not try your hand at a unique and creative cake topper for your wedding?
